Scariest Movies of All Time

I’ll be honest, when I watch a horror movie, especially a well done horror movie, I revert back to a seven year old version of myself. I usually sit there covering my face with my fingers with my thumbs jammed in my ears to prevent the horror that unfolds from wafting into my brain. I guess it doesn’t really matter when I do this in private but when I’m at the theater, it’s a bit embarrassing when my fear trumps my need to retain male adult composure.

I will say though that despite being so affected by horror movies, I still watch them frequently. I suffer from the same condition as most of the world and I have a sadistic addiction to assaulting my imagination with the horrible thoughts that make me require a night light within arm’s distance every night in bed.

There are a couple of movies that aren’t on this list that some might argue should be. I’ve excluded classics such as Nosferatu and more modern classics such as Night of the Living Dead (the original). They definitely deserve to be on a list of great horror films, and I admit that they thoroughly scared me but the fear waned quickly after the movie ended. I also excluded a lot of great modern horror movies like Friday the 13th, Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, The Descent, 1408, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Conjuring, Etc; I thought all these movies were great but once again, the problem is that they didn’t keep me awake for more than one night. Now without further ado, the following are the films that have scarred my psyche for life (spoiler alerts):

Event Horizon (1997)
What do you get when you board a space vessel that has been to hell and back? A ship that will literally rip your guts out. I’ve always been especially affected by possession movies probably because of a strict Catholic upbringing, but this movie took an interesting twist and decided to possess a vessel instead of a person. What ensues is absolute horror (hint: people die).

Evil Dead (1981)
Sam Raimi’s low budget first feature film was so impactful that it not only became a cult classic, but it also launched the entire career of a man who went on to direct blockbusters like the original Spider Man trilogy and Oz the Great and Powerful. The film was also banned in some countries because of its disturbing and violent content. Of course the film also dealt with demonic possession, a topic near and dear to my heart.

The Sixth Sense (1999)
Arguably the first and last great movie by M. Night Shyamalan, the story begins in nearly the same manner as Moby Dick, with enigmatic scenes which raises the question of the existence of ghosts versus psychological concoctions. A third of the way into the movie, the whale is revealed in such a way that one can easily start believing that there are actually ghosts all around us at all times. Not only did this movie make it hard for me to sleep, it also made it hard for me to shower and drive alone at night. Get out of my back seat you damn ghosts.

The Shrine (2010)
The Shrine, a relatively unknown modern indie film, definitely deserves a spot as one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. The film suffers from poor “made for tv” cinematography, but at the core, the story is one of the scariest I’ve experienced. It begins with a search for a missing friend, and leads a group of travelers to a satanic discovery that turns their worlds upside down. This one left me sleeping with the lights on for over a week.

Ring (1998)
The highest grossing film in Japan and widely considered the scariest Japanese horror film to date, Ring asked the question, “What if we literally scared people to death?” I used to wonder what they’d look like but I wonder no more. Ring answers the question, and the answer is: contorted and horrifying. We follow the protagonist, a journalist who discovers that people are dying exactly one week after watching a mysterious video tape. As we follow the journalist, we are forced to watch the tape with her, and suddenly, we feel as if we’re just as invested in finding a cure as she is. The movie does a great job in involving the viewer and leaving you feeling unsettled long after its viewing.

The Exorcist (1973)
I first tried to watch this movie when I was six years old and for a long time, I wanted to be a priest because this movie convinced me it was the only way to be able to ward off demonic possession effectively. I obviously hadn’t seen the end of the movie back then. The movie is a bit dated and the special effects aren’t very convincing but it still manages to scare me beyond any other movie I’ve ever seen. The imagery in the movie will forever be burned into my memories and I will continue to occasional wake up in the middle of the night and imagine the face of a possessed Linda Blair, craning her neck back like a psychotic swan to look at me and smile.
